Approximately 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's city of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to police.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postboxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they announced in a release.
Police state they were notified during the night on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued liquid.
The fluid had been applied in the form of a swastika, they reported.
Officers then located many other marked automobiles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement report initial examinations show the substance was most likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no clue as to its origin; authorities are presently not informed of any harm in relation with the occurrence," they added.
City officials announced they were trying "to resolve the case" and have asked to the residents for details.
A senior representative said the vandalism rendered him speechless and had to be solved promptly.
"This event affects the center of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack five years ago," he stated on a platform, recalling the death of nine people by a assailant targeting people of immigrant origin in February 2020.
