The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Sees Significant Partnership Formed By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the nation's established political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Political Discussions Underway

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
